Cascina Merlata is a new housing district in Milan, planned by the Milan-based Firm (Citterio+Viel) and promoted by Confcooperative (the Regional Coop Associacion).
Our housing project is an attempt to realize medium-budget dwellings, reaching a good quality architecture. Milan contractors are usually building collective housing that are driven by construction costs. Together with the client (two coops from Milan) we have tried to stress the usual typologies’ configuration and the choice of materials in order to achieve a good standard of living in spite of the used resources. In order to get a surplus to be used to increase building’s quality we minimized the exteriors’ surface and designed a compact layout of dwellings, optimizing the internal functions.
