| The history and evolution of the monument are linked to social realities that, across the ages, projected their messages into built artifacts. In time the monument became an anti-architecture, its function got subordinated to pure meaning (memory of events, heroes, ideologies). The distance between memory, collective values and the exaltation of the individual has been always fragile. The monument is ambiguous: it can honor the client and, at the same time, the society who supported it. The 2010 monument has to face the disruption of collectivity the way we knew it, aknowledge its new forms and the end of ideologies. Who will study the first decade of 2000 will not visit the physical remenants, our society doesn't have time to produce them anymore, but will pass trough the multimedia sources. Our society produces data. |
