Cascina Merlata represents one of the most important urban regeneration programs in the north-west area of Milan, a strategic intervention aimed to transform a large urban district through a broader vision of territorial regeneration, combining architectural design, functional mix, and careful attention to public spaces.
The Masterplan, designed by the Citterio/Viel studio, defines the development of a mixed use of residential, office, commercial, and service functions, entrusted to leading international design practices.
Within this context, our project involves the construction of two residential buildings accommodating a total of 90 housing units. The apartments are developed with various typological layouts, designed to meet the needs of a diverse and contemporary user base, ensuring flexibility in distribution, living comfort, and a high quality of both interior and exterior spaces.
The distinctive corner position of the plot played a key role in shaping the design strategies. The project, at the final design stage, interprets this condition as an opportunity to establish a direct dialogue with the surrounding urban context. The buildings open toward the public and green spaces of the new district, creating visual and functional relationships with the neighboring architecture and with the historic Cascina Merlata, an identity-defining element and a repository of local memory.
The volumetric articulation, building orientation, and façade design have been carefully studied to enhance exposure, improve the environmental quality of the living spaces, and contribute to the definition of a recognizable urban facade. The project thus stands as a significant component within the masterplan, combining architectural contemporaneity, sensitivity to context, and a high quality of living.
