Competition/Winning Proposal Varese, Italy, 2013

Promoter: Varese’s Chamber of Architects

With: Francesco Fornaciari, Anita Sala

The design envisions eight service towers, imagined as guardians—viewpoints from which to experience the lake from new perspectives. Rooted in their context, each tower will host activities in dialogue with its surroundings: a kiosk, a canoe depot, a fishermen’s shelter, a jury station for rowing competitions, an alcove for lovers, a birdwatching platform.

Similar in form and reversible in nature, the towers will be constructed of wood and steel. Their purpose is to complement the existing facilities of the area, creating a network of distinctive stations that are both visible from afar and useful for orientation.

Above all, the towers are conceived for local residents: flexible spaces designed to adapt over time. They may even be reconfigured as a dispersed hotel, managed digitally, introducing new forms of tourism to the lakeside landscape.
