Desert Villa

United Arab Emirates, 2018

Client: Private

This desert villa is a concept developed for a private client, owner of a plot of land located in an arid desert environment. The design is guided by strategies aimed at ensuring domestic comfort despite the extreme climatic conditions.

Key principles include the use of the ground’s thermal inertia—achieved by partially embedding the construction below the surface—to stabilize indoor temperatures. Ventilation is managed through a double-layered roof, designed to accelerate convective airflows: heated air is drawn upward while cooler, stationary air, captured from cavities beneath the sand, is introduced into the living spaces. Finally, natural light is carefully orchestrated through zenithal skylights and a diffuse lighting system, optimizing daylight while limiting direct solar exposure.

The result is a home that harmonizes contemporary living with the resilience of vernacular desert strategies, reinterpreted through modern design and technology.
