There are many ways to engage with the past, each emphasizing a particular quality of the “before”: tradition, the patina of time, memory, or the value of historical techniques and cultures. In this project, we were working within a context where recent history had left strong and tangible traces. It would have been easy to succumb to the temptation of replication—to simulate what no longer exists—yet the client’s brief called for the integration of new activities and contemporary lifestyles.
Given these conditions, we chose to work on an evocative level, making the history of the place visible where necessary through careful design choices: the selection of materials, the narratives embedded in local culture, and the references to the context that shaped it. The furnishings we designed reflect these principles, balancing the practical requirements of temporary hospitality with subtle references to the site’s recent history.
This approach guided the choice of a restrained material palette—iron rods, tempered glass, mixed fabrics, and wood—allowing the objects to be functional, flexible, and modern, while simultaneously evoking the cultural and historical layers of the space through their textures, details, and presence.
