Sabaudia (LT), Italy

Sabaudia is a small town south of Rome, about 80 km from the capital. Uniquely, it is one of the few planned cities built from scratch in the 20th century and stands as one of the finest examples of Italian Rationalism.
Over the years, Milk Train has been commissioned to design a variety of public spaces: from the belvedere overlooking the lake to docks for rowing enthusiasts, from refreshment kiosks to shading systems for the summer sailing school, from multifunctional furnishings in the central square to a small open-air theatre for the city’s summer cultural program.
Each project has been developed by seeking points of connection with the aesthetics and history of the area—drawing inspiration both from the decorative motifs of the foundation-era buildings and from the forms and construction techniques of the lestre, the temporary huts once self-built by shepherds during transhumance, before the city itself was founded.
